Weekly Yoga Therapy Sessions

Since 2006, as a community service, Dr. Sarkar has volunteered his time to conduct YT Classes on the topic of Daily Practice, each session being two hours long, two or three times weekly, in Virginia’s Hampton Roads area. (See the YSN Calendar for details.) He is assisted by his volunteer team of yoga instructors, Abha Gupta, Ph.D. and Saghana Chakrabortty, M.D., and in their absence, guest instructors that include Piary Sobhan, Amrendra Narayan Bharat, and Ramani Kotaru.

In contrast with other types of yoga classes, Dr. Sarkar teaches Yoga Therapy, or the “therapeutic outcome of yoga,” using the philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra-s (Yoga Aphorisms) and the practice of “Ashtanga Yoga” (8-limbed Yoga). In Yoga Therapy, the “para-sympathetic response” (relaxation response) is invoked, to induce physical and mental relaxation, in contrast to invoking the body’s “sympathetic response” that occurs in exercise or other yoga practices.

These YT classes are sponsored jointly by Taksha Institute School of Integrative Medicine (SIM) and Patanjali Yog Samiti (a Yog teaching body of Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust, Haridwar, India), in association with Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust USA, Inc.

Yoga Therapy Seminars/Workshops (as scheduled)

TI offers various presentations on YT and related topics in the format of workshops, seminars, panels, or retreats (called TI Events) at different venues in Virginia (Hampton Roads area), Washington DC, California, and other locations both in the U.S. and abroad. These events range from 3- to 24-hours long, and include topics such as Integrative Medicine, Integrative Nutrition, Yoga Therapy for Chronic Ailments, Yoga Therapy for Reproductive Health of Women and Men, Daily Practice, Ayurveda and Yoga, etc.

See the full list of Yoga and Health related topics at the TI web site: www.taksha.org.
